I have been using Tropical Tradition Coconut Oil for years, primarily for sautéing and home-made granola. I had never heard of Coconut Manna and was not quite sure what it was, but it sounded interesting to try it out.MY EXPERIENCE: When I received it I wasn't quite sure what to think. It was very solid and obviously had melted, then re-solidified on its side. In addition, I could see there were 2 layers of different colors that had separated. The dark layer tasted pretty darn good and the lighter layer was oily. I was able to get on Nutiva's web site and get their 800-993-4367 x2 number and they had a very helpful guy on the phone that helped me understand the product. Let me share this with you: ABOUT THE PRODUCT: It is a whole-food product, meaning it is 100% coconut with very little processing. Unfortunately that is not the case.I followed the directions on the container to soften the product so that I could mix the oil back into the coconut. I ended up using an immersion blender to thoroughly mix it which worked very well. I find it almost inedible. The texture is gritty and very thick. It sticks to the inside of my mouth and leaves an unpleasant dry sensation. It doesn't "melt" in my mouth as described on the container. I don't enjoy the taste either. The pure taste of coconut oil is there, but with another taste mixed in that ruins it and leaves an aftertaste. I'm really disappointed. I'm planning on trying another brand of coconut butter and see if it's a problem with the Nutiva brand or just my own taste/texture preferences. I enjoy Coconut Manna very much. I add it to my oatmeal instead of sugar or maple syrup or have a teaspoon of it plain and it satisfies my sweet tooth without any sugar. And its not really very sweet, but it is very rich with a natural coconut flavor. The only thing that I dislike about it is the need to soften it by sitting it in hot water (you are not supposed to microwave it - and I don't do that anyway since microwaves are not terribly healthy). It is also a little bit grainy, instead of being creamy, but that is something that I was easily able to adjust to. All-in-all, a product that I will try to keep on hand in my kitchen. |
